Ivorian-based photographer, Joana Choumali, is now part of the Institute Museum of Ghana’s permanent collection!
We are honored to announce the work of Ivorian-based photographer, Joana Choumali [b. 1974], is now part of the Institute Museum of Ghana’s permanent collection.
Bakh Yayaye [2020] is a very strong representation of the Piclet Prize Winner’s work which seeks to question the link between past and present in contemporary Africa and self-image depending on a given environment. With an intricate embroidery technique inculcated in ethnographic portraiture, she further plays with the gaze of the viewer, who somewhat uncomfortably is asked to examine her sitters in the same scientific way.
Trained in Graphic Arts and Photography in Casablanca (Morocco), Choumali’s work has found itself in many esteemed private and institutional collections all over the world.
