Visiting Fellow Richard Nattoo permanently recognized at Institute of Jamaica Museum Collection
We would like to congratulate our 2022 Visiting Fellow, Richard Nattoo, on receiving one of Jamaica’s highest honours for an emerging artist. His work now permanently resides in the Institute of Jamaica Museum.
This stunning piece was rewarded as a result of the National Open Call on October 2021 to artists to reimagine Queen Nanny in commemoration of Jamaica’s 60th Anniversary of Independence (2022). The project was spearheaded by Professor Leo Douglas and speaks to a profound symbol of Afro-Caribbean history.
The work is rooted in what many believe would have been a common practice of not only Nanny but of so many formerly enslaved Africans who took shelter in the Jamaican mountains. They learned and built communities around the spiritual, healing and nurturing power of our forests, plants, rivers and unique birdlife.
We congratulate you on the milestone Richard and look forward to receiving you in Ghana!
